Overall record: 5-5 (.500)
Well, we didn't fare as well this week as last week. Still, 2-3 keeps us even on the season, so we're not doing terribly. We could really use a good week this weekend though to give us some breathing room. Our goal for the season is 60%. Here's how the games went...
1. Arizona (-7.5) @ UT-San Antonio | LOSER (Arizona 26 - UTSA 23)
Thursday 7pm CT | FS1 | San Antonio, TX
Talk about the ultimate tease... this game was super tight, and you kept thinking that eventually Arizona would break out and score TDs, but 4 FGs in the redzone doomed the Wildcats. The worst part was the last play of the game, where Arizona recovers a lateral and returned it for a touchdown that would have given us the cover, but the refs called it an illegal forward pass, thus negating the touchdown, and giving UTSA the cover. Back breaker.
2. Ole Miss (-20.5) @ Vandy | WINNER (Ole Miss 41 - Vandy 3)
Saturday 3:30pm CT | ESPN | Nashville, TN
This one was 20-0 at the half, and just a few plays into the 3rd quarter, Ole Miss returned an interception for a touchdown. It was never in doubt. Vandy is terrible.
3. Duke (-19.5) @ Troy | LOSER (Duke 34 - Troy 17)
Saturday 6pm CT | ESPN3 | Troy, AL
Duke messed around and didn't capitalize on several different opportunities. Even late, they had a chance, in Troy territory, to kick a field goal to give us the cover, and didn't take advantage of it. We were this close to covering this one, just like the Arizona game.
4. Memphis (+23) @ UCLA | WINNER (UCLA 42 - Memphis 35)
Saturday 9pm CT | PAC-12 Network | Los Angeles, CA
Memphis is legit. Yeah, you heard me correctly. Memphis was this close to pulling the upset in the Rose Bowl against the #11 team in the country. Justin Fuente has turned this program around. I expect to cover with this team quite a bit this year.
5. Colorado St (+10) @ Boise St | LOSER (Boise St 37 - Colorado St 24)
Saturday 9:15pm CT | ESPN2 | Boise, ID
So much for that "changing of the guard" I was talking about. Boise led 37-10 in the 4th quarter, so it was out of reach for a long while. Colorado St did make a game out of it, and scored two 4th quarter TDs, and drove from their own 1 yard line to the Boise St 12 before throwing an interception with 2:54 left in the game. Had they scored a TD there, we would have had the cover.
Here are the opening lines I'm keeping an eye on this week...
Georgia Southern (+21.5) @ Georgia Tech
Arkansas (+3) @ Texas Tech
Tulsa (-1.5) @ Florida Atlantic
Purdue @ Notre Dame (-28)
Rice @ Texas A&M (-32)
Arizona St (-14.5) @ Colorado
